On its 10th anniversary, the Edinburgh University Shakespeare Company is thrilled to present its fringe debut: ‘Much Ado About Nothing’.
Shakespeare’s iconic comedy is turned on its head in a fresh, fiery update that transports the action to the idyllic but troubled streets of early 1980s Sicily.
When Don Pedro of Messina pays a visit to Leonato’s bar on his rounds, four restless youths are thrown together for a fraught weekend of revelry and romance. As the summer draws on and festivities heat up, the violence that has engulfed Palermo seeps into the budding relationships, threatening to tear them apart. In a culture that demands silence, it only takes one rumour to start a riot.
The Edinburgh University Shakespeare Company build on their reputation for innovation with a gutsy adaptation that brings the Bard’s original Sicilian setting in touch with recent debates about power and who wields it. Between humour and heartbreak sits an uncomfortable question: how much have things really changed?
